Trying to determine size of this US Flag

Someone I know has a flag sealed in it’s original packaging and they refuse to open the package to determine the flag’s measurements.

Is there any way to find out the measurements given the following information printed on the packaging label?

Stock No. G5-4037
Flag, U.S. National Ensign, Size No. Nr-9
Wool Bunting 1 each
Contract No. N140-155s-49588B
Valley Forge Flag Co., Spring City Pa.
Date Pkd July, 1954
Preserved, Packaged and Packed in accord. Spec. Mil-F-2692A
Sec. 5.1.2, 5.2.2, 5.2.4, 5.3

Here’s the info I have so far:

  • It is a 48-star flag.
  • It was intended to be flown on a US Navy ship.
  • The “Size No. Nr-9” refers to a single-digit “size rating,” but I’m unable to locate corresponding measurements to size ratings.

I would appreciate any info anyone might have on this item. I know that, for the most part, US Naval flag size is proportional to the size of the ship, so what would the minimum size a flag could be on a US Navy vessel?

Thank you very much for any guidance!

If you can see any of the stars or stripes, you can take a measurement and use this site to calculate the size of the flag: http://www.usflag.org/flag.specs.html

The Valley Forge Flag Company still exists. The link is to their contact page. Perhaps you could ask them and supply them with the relevant information.
