Trying to find a certain Baltimore restaurant

Hmm… There’s a Ruth’s Chris Steak House near the Harbor, I’ve been there and it is a very nice, wood paneled decor.

The M & S Grill is also near the Harbor, a McCormick & Schmick’s offshoot.

There also used to be a seafood-and-chops grill type of restaurant called The Chart House in the Inner Harbor but it was replaced by something else the last time I was down that a ways.

But you say it was “walking distance” from the Harbor, not on or in the Harbor, right? Was it in a residential area (Fells Point, maybe), or literally just a block or two off of the Harbor?

I’m getting the idea I probably haven’t been to this particular restaurant, but I like the idea of searching for it for you online.

This is probably not the place you’re thinking of, but if you’re a fan of HBO’s The Wire, you might enjoy stopping by Werner’s Restaurant, 231 E. Redwood Street, about three blocks north of Harborplace between Calvert and Guilford. It’s the place that many of the show’s City Hall politicians meet for lunch.

I haven’t been there myself, so I can’t recommend it, but I can guarantee you that it’s a real taste of old Baltimore: it’s been there for almost 60 years, which is why the producers picked it as a location.

Maybe some of the other B’more natives can vouch for the cuisine. I’ve been meaning to drop by for lunch sometime, but I won’t be able to get there anytime in the next few weeks.

The real shame is that you can’t go to Haussner’s any more, Baltimore’s late, great restaurant. Am I right, fellow Baltimoreans?

We moved up here a year ago, on New Year’s Eve - friends helped us move into a row house in Federal Hill and we all got drunk and watched the fireworks from on top of the roof. This year we had a repeat, only without the U-Haul. I guess I should fix my location tag.

As for Phillips’, I doubt they make their own ice cream – their specialty is seafood and especially crabmeat. Like robardin notes, the tables are covered with paper (although this is de rigeur for places that sell crabs by the bushel). Weird side note: I went to high school with one of the Phillips boys. Downstairs from Phillips’ there’s a steak-housey place called {Something-or-other} Brewery that has delicious entrees, good beers, and so-so dessert. Go there for dinner, and then try Vaccaro’s. V’s is a great romantic dessert place but it will be packed on the weekends.

Oh, and MrFloppy, you can get Guinness-flavored ice cream at the Jamaican takeout place in the White Oak shopping center, where US-29 meets New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring MD.

Well, welcome to town. A little late, but whatever. We have parties all the time.

It was not a residential area. We walked there from the hotel attached to Harborplace. It was not on the water, however.

If it amuses you to continue the search, by all means do, but I’m pretty resigned to not knowing at this point. There are much greater problems in life.

Since General Questions has come up short, let’s try MPSIMS.

And the winner is . . .

Yup, spotted it when we walked to Little Italy. We had dinner there (Legal Seafoods) before the show, including the chocolate ice cream I’d remembered so well. It was a great dinner, and a great trip!

Thanks everyone for all your help!
