Trying to find a complete passage from Dune

I’m putting “a beginning is a very delicate time” into the google search and only coming up with the monologue from the beginning of the movie. I want to find the passage from the book where the line is written, but I left my copy at home before coming back to school.

IIRC, there actually IS the line “A beginning is a very delicate time” in the book, only an explanation of how and why a beginning is a very delicate time follows rather than “Know then that it is the year 10191.”

I’d like to find the whole paragraph as it was printed rather than said on screen. Help would be appreciated.

“A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of Muad’Dib, then take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad’Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place. --From “Manual of Muad’Dib” by the Princess Irulan.”

Or, even better:

"Know, sisters of the Boni Moroni, that any study of the life of Mauve’Bib demands the subtlest attention to details of place. Can you truly understand why a man is a thing, if you neglect to understand where he is that thing that he is?

Commence, then, with the fact that it is on the planet Cowboydan that Mauve’Bib spent his childhood - yet it is on Arruckus, the planet known as Doon, that he fulfilled his destiny. It is Doon that is his homeworld, Doon that is his place of triumph, Doon that is forever his principle mailing address.

Send therefore to Doon your requests for recipes and reprints - or send them not at all. – from “The Making of the Messiah, 10,193,” by the Princess Serutan.

Damned geeks and nerds! How I loathe you all…

for answering the question before I could get to it!

Geez. There was only one of me.

So I didn’t recall correctly. There was just one line about beginnings and being delicate and it was just different in both the movie and the book.

Thanks for your help.

I don’t have the book. But is it perhaps near the scene where Paul kills Jamis?

It was probably from the unedited first draft, where Paul looks into Feyd’s eyes and says, “In the beginning…please be delicate.”

No. It’s at the top of the first page.

begins banging head against wall for not being here when I was needed

“To those who would be of service: There is a Space-Between, a place not precisely at those places more commonly explored. Yet though it be not obvious, yet it is neverthless of vital importance. It is neither to the Left nor to the Right, but may be found immediately below the Center. There. That is it. Now scratch.”
