If I remember correctly, it was said by a french knig concerning the lessining of the power of the English kings.
It went something like :“I would rather be a beggar in Paris than king of England”, but I’ll be damned if I can find it anywhere!
Isn’t that Dickens? i.e. Fiction?
No, my memory just doesn’t work anymore. “the people used to say the King was the sturdiest beggar in England.” That’s the Dickens I was thinking of, and it’s more like satire.
There’s a quote from an apocryphal Shakespearean play that’s something like, “I had rather be slain in France than starve in England.” If you think that could be it, I’ll find the source for you.
Perhaps you’re thinking of this:
“I would rather be a beggar and single than a queen and married.” - Queen Elizabeth I
[stupid Python remark]
And by the way, I think you may have misspelt “knig”. Isn’t it “knnniggit”?
[/stupid Python remark]
No, no. I am sure that it was said by a french king concering an English king. Perhaps right after the Magna Carta was signed…
Google says no hits at all on the phrase “rather be a beggar in France”
Evidently the King never made it to the web, whoever he was.
Tris
From Tales of Froissart regarding the 14th century wars between England and France and the part played by the Scots:
Could this be what you were thinking of?

I don’t think so. It was in reference to the limits put upon the Kings power. The point of the King’s comment was that the King of England is not really a King because he is forced to deal with a parliament.
BTW, I do not know if that was the exact quote. I do not actually remember it. What I printed was more of a half-remembered paraphrase.
Well, if it ever WAS said, I’d put money down that is was said by Louis XIV.
By the way, the reason I said that was because your BIOS might be set to give warning beeps. I recommend you browse your BIOS settings. It’ll only take a couple of minutes, and it’s the first thing you’ll encounter when you boot up.
Libertarian: I thought that too, but I tried all the searches I could think of about divine right etc. No luck yet.
I’m sorry. The above post was intended for another thread.
