trying to find referene to a GM (the car) invention

I’m trying to find reference to something I was sure I’d read about many years ago. Not finding it so now I’m starting to doubt.
It was offered as one of the potential solutions for California’s pollution issues. As I remember one of the car companies (pretty sure it was GM) had come up with some sort of filter system that was installed in the front of the cars that would be used to clean pollution as the car puttered around. So it would filter other car’s pollution (rather than reducing its own - if I remember correctly this being one of the reasons it got canned).
I’ve googled for a while now, but either I’m totally dreaming I read this or my google-fu is particularly weak cause I am not finding squat.
Anyone remember anything like this? If you do find the actual article can you please share what search terms you used?
Thanks much!

I must say, that’s not even a concept I’ve even heard of, let alone an actual thing. Interesting idea, I guess…

I’d heard of something along these lines, as I recall the idea was coating the radiator with a catalyst which would “clean up” pollutants as the air flowed across the radiator fins.

I didn’t and don’t buy it; catalysts like this need to be at much higher temperatures than can be done with a radiator.

i don’t have a name or cite. no recall on who, what, when, where. didn’t read published on paper but something on the net.

i recall something like maybe a redesigned radiator that would heat a catalytic coating and react with some pollutants in the airstream.

They’re called Direct Ozone Reduction systems. California Air Resources Board pdf

Looks like some BMWs have them.

I remember reading about this too. I would have sworn it was Volvo, but google fails me. It was a grill that sucked up ozone because of the metal it was made of, right?

ETA: Ninja’d. This is why I love this place! LOL!

I just noticed that you (OP) wanted the search terms used.
