Trying to loose weight - help me with the numbers

I am 5’6" and 200 pounds. I want to bring my weight down to 130. That would be okay, right?

Anyway, if I exercised on a treadmill every day and burned 1,000 calories per day (on an about 2,000 calories/day diet), how much weight would I loose in a week? how much in a month?

Thanks!

WRS

3,600 calories makes a pound, pretty much.

If we assume you use up 1,500 per day just staying alive that means you’re losing 500 calories per day.

Looks like about a pound a week from where I’m sitting.

I’ll leave it as an exercise for the student to figure out how much this would be per month.

If you are a guy, 130lbs is WAY too low IMHO. I would shoot for 165 and go from there.

However, let’s play with the numbers.

I pretended you were 30 years old with the basal metabolic rate calculator, and you need 1,943 calories a day just to stay alive. Let’s just round it up to 2,000 to make things easy on me.

Eat 2,000 calories a day. Burn off 1,000 calories a day. You’re living on 1,000 a day when you NEED 2k. You have a deficit of 1k calories a day.

Theoretically, that puts you losing 2 pounds a week, or 8 pounds a month.

But …

Water retention, muscle gain, and what you eat can lower or increase those numbers. It’s not as simple as calories in, calories out, unfortunately.

The other fun part is you are going to need quite a bit of time per day to exercise, and you’d have to do it every single day. Assuming you’d burn 100 calories per 1 mile of walking, you’re going to have to walk 10 miles a day. I hope you’ve got comfy shoes and no social life.

This is the part of the post where I recommend you look into doing Atkins and learn to rev up your metabolism and avoid the 10 miles a day thing.

That extra “o” in “lose” has gotta weigh at least ten pounds.

(Sorry, I’m a copy editor, I couldn’t restrain myself!)
