After reading the Harry Potter books, I was reminded of a series of books I read in high school about a boy named Pug who was a servant in a castle but became a great wizard.
The story line begins with Pug beginning his training but is then pulled into an alternate world where he continues his magic training. His new world then tries to conquer the old world and he’s the hero of the story in saving his old world.
I know it’s not much to go on but I’ve been trying to remember the titles of the books. I believe the first title might have been The Apprentice or The Sorcerer’s Apprentice but I’m not sure.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks for the help.
The books you are thinking of are Magician:Apprentice and Magician:Master, written by Raymond E. Feist. They are part of the Riftwar Saga and are very good novels, I think.
Yep, those are them. There’s a whole bunch more of 'em written since then (stuff after the Riftwar Saga, IIRC). A couple of games, too. (Betrayal at Krondor and Return to Krondor. The first one was pretty good, if short, and I never played the second.)
Young adult/fantasy genre: boy and girl, medieval times, there’s some kind of dragon or monster growing inside a vented metal container that has to be kept inside a dungheap for warmth while the creature matures. What they DON’T know is that they MUST NOT look directly at the critter/let it out, lest they die/all hell breaks loose. At one point the girl is alone in pitch blackness in a tunnel with the thing and only survives because she can’t see it. Also involved is an alchemist or someone who claims to be an alchemist, and his unsuccessful attempts to turn lead into gold. The title contains the word “alchemist” or “apprentice” or something similar, but I couldn’t find it on Amazon. Anyone?
In addition, there’s also a trilogy set on the other side of the rift that I think is far superior to the Magician books. Really outstanding. By Feist & Wurtis. The “Empire” series, methinks.
