trying to remember kids book about rascally fish

When I was a kid somewhere between ages 4 and 10 lets say (around 1976-1982) we had a book about a fish that was always swimming backwards and getting into trouble, but one day saved the day by defeating some other mean fish. Does anyone remember this book? I tryed Amazon, but no real luck. Are there other boards for this type of thing?

By the way, this is not the Rainbow Fish or Fish is Fish.

Sounds to me like the Gillygoofang…he swam backwards so he wouldn’t get bubbles in his eyes.

No, I’m serious! That was the fish’s name. Don’t know if that’s also the name of the book, though. Wait…

Yes, it’s The Gillygoofang, by George Mendoza.

Hope that helps!

Was it “Arty the Smarty”?

I had that book around that same time frame and it sounds similar. Did the fish you’re thinking of do things like blow bubbles to make the other fish laugh and take the worm off a fisherman’s hook and replace it with a boot, or possibly a tire? That’s about all I remember right now.

My mom still has the book if you want more specific info, like author, ISBN, etc.

It is Arty the Smarty – thanks a lot. I found it on Amazon, but it’s out of print, so I’ll have to see if I want to spend a lot of money on a used copy.
