Trying to use Verizon DSL without installing Verizon software.

We have Verizon DSL at home, and because we have a router i didn’t install any of the crappy connection software on either of our computers. I just put my Verizon account name and passward into the appropriate place in the router settings, and we’re good to go.

But my wife is currently subletting an apartment in New York for a few weeks. The apartment’s owners have Verizon DSL, and they have a DSL modem but no router. They gave my wife their Verizon username and password so she can use her laptop, but i’m not sure how to set up an internet connection to Verizon directly through a router without having the Verizon connection software.

I assume there’s a way to do this, and was wondering if any Dopers out there might be able to help us out.

A pppoe connection should be all you need. You don’t say what operating system the laptop uses, but here are the instructions on creating a pppoe connection in Win XP.

But I would have her take the Verizon software CD with her just in case.

I’m running SBC DSL, so I don’t know if this will qualify, but you can also download the SBC software and everything directly from the sbc site as long as you have the user account names/passwords…

Thanks folks. I did some searching on the internet and found out how to set up the ppoe connection manually in the “Network settings.”

The only problem is that the people whose apartment she is renting left her their username, but not their password, so its no go right now. She’s going to get in touch with them and see if they will give her the password.
