TSA controversey re Muslim women

I haven’t followed the whole TSA thing very closely but can’t avoid the anecdotal craziness that is being reported.

I haven’t seen any reports or pictures related to Muslim women travelling in their traditional garb.

Has anyone?

I did find this CAIR press release that states that women should only allow their head and neck to be touched. There must have been incidents by now.

You realize that a Muslim’s “traditional garb” can be just about anything, right? The Muslim women that I lived with in Cameroon sometimes wore nothing more than a length of cloth wrapped around their waists. Islam is found in cultures across the world, each with their own ideas about how to dress. “Islamic traditional garb” is no more descriptive than “Christian traditional garb.”

I think the word you are probably looking for is hijab.

But do Muslims?

I doubt Muslim women will prevail against the mindless TSA goons. A guy is San Diego stripped to his briefs. They told him to put his clothes back on so they could pat him down. I’m afraid that their exercise of their religious beliefs here will simply mean they can’t fly.

I would expect that women in “traditional muslim garb” - head scarfs, full length dress, things like that - are probably less likely to be selected for additional “screening”. The people doing these searches are probably more likely to select targets that are likely to comply with pat downs. Makes life much easier for them.

Uh. Yeah, I think in general that they are pretty aware of their own diversity.

Here are some pictures of Muslims wearing things. “Islamic garb” can be encompass from my old National Geographic style topless neighbors, hip Turkish clubbers in miniskirts, women in saris, Hui Chinese in their jaunty little caps…in other words, Islamic dress tends to be as cultural as it is religious, and there as many interpretations of “Islamic dress” as there are Muslims. The flowing veils and robes we associate with Islam are specifically Middle-Eastern in origin, and while the style has spread in limited ways, it’s certainly not what the majority of Muslim women wear. I’d be surprised if the majority of Muslim women even wear a simple headscarf. Many do not consider it to be religiously required or simply don’t care to observe that particular bit.

Again, it’s like saying “Christian garb.” It can mean just about anything.

This website is also noteworthy for reminding us of the vital role that Muslims have traditionally played in Starfleet. We only enjoy the freedoms we take for granted because of the brave service of these men and women, without which we would all be under the Dominion’s boot. Alexander Siddig - Wikipedia

Of course, there have been occasional bad actors - such as this man, who served under the war criminal and all-round incompetent Kathryn Janeway: Abdullah II of Jordan - Wikipedia . But the overwhelming majority of Muslims, as with the overwhelming majority of people generally, condemn the abuses of these people.
