Botswana has never had a coup and has held elections regularly since independence.
South Africa has never had a coup, but there are, umm, “special circumstances” there. While there have been regular elections since the founding of the Union the franchise was of course restricted to whites (for the most part) until 1994.
LOL! I am trying to imagine US covert ops trying to keep a low profile in Mali, I mean they are easy enough to spot when in a place with actual tourists(look for the guy auditioning to play a terminator in a hawaiian shirt).
I’m really curious as to how he knew they were covert ops people. Doesn’t meet the common sense test, to me.
When I was posted to Mali, American military guys would show up about once a year for training exercises with the Malian military. They would camp out on the Marine Security Guard compound. The only other military presence was the Defense Attache’s office at the embassy.
Which might settle things in the south of the country, but still leaves the interim government with the problem of whether to recognize the independence of this new “Azawad” or to reconquer it.
