I saw an ad recently for an all-in-one bathroom cleaner that “contained teflon”. In this ad, they specifically show a bathtub that has been treated by this substance. My question is “how is this combination not a recipe for a shattered skull?” I almost slipped in the tub the other day, with no teflon. If I’m missing something here, I’d like to know what it is.
Maybe it comes with a pair of ice-skates?
Do you have a brand name? Maybe we can find a method to this madness if we knew more.
I’ve seen Teflon used as, um, the opposite of a surfectant. To cause water to bead and roll off rather than form a sheet. (What’s the word??) For example, Teflon-coated umbrellas can be dried by merely shaking off the drops of water. Perhaps Teflon is used in a bathtub because dry Teflon is less slippery than wet fiberglass/porcelain/tile.
Yes, I read the link. I still doubt it. Teflon was designed to reduce friction, and friction is what keeps you from cracking your skull by slipping in the tub. I still need more info.
Not all bathtubs are smooth. I live in an apartment where the bathub has a “textured” floor (think lots of tiny bumps). It is very difficult to clean because the texturing shreds sponges and also makes it difficult to scrub the surface (since I’m only making contact with the top of the bumps). I might have to look into this product
Chlorox makes some like that, among others. I have a package of Chlorox wipes with Teflon sitting here in my room (I used it to clean the fridge).
If you think about it, though, a Teflon-coated frying pan wouldn’t be that slippery to walk on. While doing dishes, the ridges of my fingerprints seem to grip the surface of the pan quite nicely.
We got some toilet cleaner with Teflon (I don’t recall the brand, sorry), and thus far I am underwhelmed by its stain-preventing ability. It doesn’t seem to work any better or worse than normal toilet cleaner. YMMV.
I’ve used a tub cleaner with Teflon for oh, a few months now. It claims to make it more difficult for dirt to stick to the tub.
My observations:
- my tub gets just as dirty as ever; dirt is not, in fact, sliding off my tub like eggs out of a frying pan.
- I have never felt at any risk of having my feet slide out from under me. I have noticed no difference at all in terms of how well my feet tack to the tub.
In case it makes any difference, my tub is one of those old steel ones with the feet, not a newer fiberglass model, in case that makes any difference.
