"Tubal" Cain??

Ever so often, I’ve seen in older (say, pre-1960s) books and movies a reference to Cain* as Tubal Cain. What’s that “tubal” supposed to mean? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a Catholic book or said by a Catholic character in a movie, so it looks like a Protestant thing.

*Cain of Cain and Abel “am I my brother’s keeper” fame from the book of Genesis in the Bible. Just for clarity’s sake.

Read your book of Genesis more carefully. A little further along (haven’t got one with me, so I can’t give you the ref) is a character named Tubal Cain – not the same as Cain, son of Adam and Eve. Tubal is, I believe, stated to be thev inventor of iron founding. One reason his name pops up is that the Masons claim him as a founder.

Tubal-cain was a descendent of Cain, brother of Abel. He is mentioned in Genesis 4:22. Tubal alone is mentioned in 10:2. He “forged all implements of copper and iron.” Tabira in Akkadian means “metalworker” and kayn in several Semitic languages means “smith”.

Also mentioned in Genesis is Tubal’s son Novo, the inventor of dentistry.

And his brother Sugar, the first farmer that caused a need for dentistry.

This reminds me of a book I read called Science Made Stupid. It included a fake bibliography of “science” related books, one of which was Evolution: A Communist Lie by Col. Tubalcain Billy Snowbird, USAF

I believe that it is in one of the Apocrypha that we learn of Novo’s sister Lido, legendary for alleviating the pain of others.

In addition, “Tubal-Cain” (too’bul kane’) is the secret password of the Master Mason. Some lodges may vary, however, so deep moles pay off. The Word is spelled IAOM, and pronounced EE-Ah-Oh-Mmm with one continuous out-breathing and a slight nasal tone. I can give you the Shriners’ Recognition Test (standard challenge-response format, a bunch of questions and answers), but it’s long and nobody’s asked so far.
