Tuckerfan - How bored are you?

Good man,** lightingtool**!

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside, kinda like an episode of Full House except that Bob Saget isn’t here to hug us and look knowingly at us as we discover the true meaning of the Pit.
Oh, Bob Saget, you’re like the vaguely homosexual TV dad I never had! Ha Ha!

Hey, it’s not all bad, I probably wouldn’t have dropped into MPSIMS and seen those links if you hadn’t posted them.

“Kumbaya, my Lord, kumbaya…”

And right here in this thread you saw ME go off from a bad day into a crud-brained flaming that only scorched myself, requiring an apology to my undeserving target, thus offering amusement to my detractors and a large serving of humble pie to your humble servant. Admit it – doesn’t it feel better now to have fessed up you goofed and to have apologized?

Wow. Truly well said.

I can’t speak for Tuckerfan, but I’ve always suspected that this is why he starts those threads. A perfectly justified reason IMO. Unfortunately, they often sink and we don’t always get any doper discussion.

Oh, and it’s cool that lightingtool recanted and all, but let’s not jump all over dubbing him Saint Perfect. The OP could just barely have been called offensive in the first place :).

They have recently made such posting a banable offense at the SA boards.

I take back the dipshit thing.

And I’ll 53rd (or whatever it’s up to by now) the motion of being in favor of Tuckerfan’s postings. Let’s face it, at least his topics are informative AND he hasn’t started another Tom Cruise bashing thread - (but by gosh, maybe he should - after all there just can’t be too many Tom Cruise bashing threads on the SDMB.)

Heck, the last thread I started, was about the Outhouse Peeping Tom. Granted, it was a story that had to be told, but it’s good to see others starting threads that are a bit more intellectaul than that.

It’s been shunned on my forum for a while now. People are expected to put a littly bit of effort into their posts, some users seemed to post a lot of “url-and-a-quite” posts that took no brainpower to compose. If everybody posted five or so such messages on topics they liked, the board would be a mess.

From the rules:

Huh. I always find these things after they settle down it seems. Anyways, no harm lightingtool. To be honest, I have thought about lumping everything into one big thread, because I waste too much time on the web as it is, and that might make things easier on me. The only reason I haven’t is because on another board I go to, a poster does something similar, and while it’s interesting and handy, quite often, there’s only one thing in that thread I find interesting, and it’s a bit of a pain at times, for me as a reader, to scroll through the whole thing to find that one nugget.

As for me not adding many (if any comments) to one of those threads, it seems like whenever I toss off a couple of lines of quickie comments, someone always misinterprets what I say, or seizes on a minor point I made, and launches into a discussion about (just pulling a totally fictional example out of my ass here) how the location of the comma in one of my sentences totally invalidates my entire point. So, naturally, I feel compelled to argue my point, and it goes on and on, until we both look like a couple of idiots. So I figure that it’s better I just keep my damn mouth shut, as it were.

That’s not to say I don’t mind if people comment (hell, I’m totally surprised that anyone notices some of the threads), in fact, I’d like some of the Dopers who have experience with some of the things that I post about to speak up, because quite frankly, a lot of the stuff, I simply don’t understand.

Oh, and lou, I’m temping, so I’m not unemployed (but I nearly got killed by a forklift [and sadly, I’m theonly MST3K fan there, so no point in singing about it]) so I’ll be finding another job shortly.

Me too. Most of his threads are interesting and well written. And if the title does not look interesting to me I just don’t read it.

lightingtool, good on you. I don’t think you were out of line, I can see why you’d be annoyed by it. But your second post in this thread really does more credit to you.

If you’re making a roundabout comment about my sorta-weekly “Una’s Technology Roundup” then you need to remember that’s 7 days of stuff in one post. And I assume that most people are not interested in 80% of the items, which is why I put them in one thread. You could try doing a daily roundup and not end up with more than 5 or 6 items in it. That wouldn’t be too hard for someone to scroll through, and unless it’s urgent breaking news it can wait a few hours to be posted in a group.

lightingtool, nice apology. I apologize to you, because I think I overreacted as well. It’s a peeve of mine when people complain about things they can just ignore, that tends to bring out a more hostile reaction out of me than is warranted.

I think your roundup is an excellent idea, and I’m glad you do it. 'S good stuff.

Tuckerfan, as a poster I’d suggest you give this approach a whirl. I like following and reading the links you post, but there are quite a few, and it’d be nicer–especially in a fast-paced forum like MPSIMS–if you’d collect them in a daily (or weekly) thread and go from there. If you post the thread with its collection of links and discover, later on, that you’ve found another interesting link to add, you could just post it to that same thread. I think it’d be worthwhile to try.

Emphasis mine.

See for me this is precisely why I read your posts. I subscribe to Space.com but more often than not I don’t read it as sometimes there is no cool story or only one. Or sometimes following one of there links gets you something cooler. You’re like my live breathing Space.com and related filter.
Kudos on the apology lightingtool.

And you still find time to start all these threads? I thought you were just sitting around the house picking your nose.

(Glad to hear about the temping. It might suck, but it is better than sitting around the house picking your nose. Usually.)

Since you approve Tuckerfan’s url-and-a-quite posts, I’ll start posting URLs and quoted parageraphs from urban planning-related articles … maybe five or so a day. Sure, it’s not on a “cool” topic like space exploration or astronomy, but I’m sure you won’t mind.

I know I wouldn’t mind. I don’t see me reading any of them, 'cause it sounds pretty dull, but if it’s an issue you care that much about, knock yourself out.

And maybe you’ll get the same ground-swell of support in your Pitting.
Maybe not.
