I’m taking my two youngest to Tennessee. We’ll have a couple of days on our own and then drive home with Grandma. We don’t have to stay in Tullahoma, but somewhere nearby would be best.
I’d like to do some nature-oriented stuff–not camping, because I’m a weenie, but maybe some hiking, lake-visiting, swimming, etc.
And I’d like to find an interesting place to stay, cheap if possible.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
karol
In Tullahoma and environs, you have:
Old Stone Fort
See the Jack Daniels Distillery! yes, even with kids.
Once in Tullahoma, you are fairly near Chattanooga which has whitewater rafting, a incline railway, an aquarium and other cool stuff.
You should certainly plan to get to the Bell Buckle Cafe - about 20 mi north of Tullahoma. It’s one of a kind and well worth the trip.
I second all of the sights Cub Mistress has, along with the Bell Buckle Cafe that Xema mentions. Heck, if your timing is right, you can enjoy this while y’all are here. http://www.bellbucklechamber.com/rcmoon.html
You will also be relatively close to Nashville, with all of the music attractions and the Adventure Science Center http://www.adventuresci.com/scicam/ . That’s the favorite of the kids on my short list for a fun day!
What date are you planning for this trip? This weekend (June 13-15) is Bonnaroo in Manchester and the traffic will be horrific, by anyone’s standards.
There are several Civil War battlefields in the area, if you are interested. There are also many beautiful state parks with hiking, caves and even civilized camping (shower houses, cabins to rent, etc.) Tennessee State Parks
I was planning to Google the Moon Pie Festival today, missred, thanks for the link. The Synchronized Wading is indeed a hoot.
Oooh, just missing Bonnaroo, thank God. We’re going (maybe) around the 22nd of June; if not, after July 4.
Lots of cool ideas, thank you all. I’m very excited. I’ve never taken the kids on a trip.
Jack Daniels distillery? How about the George Dickel Distillery? which is actually in Tullahoma.
Also, if you like hiking, check out Savage Gulf.
Chattanooga is way more interesting.
And nothing happens in the South on Sunday morning, except church, coffee, donuts & the paper.
