Pretty good argument for the U.S. not assuming any role in Iraqi Kurdistan, or any other part of Iraq.
Do we all hope they would stop it? Things will never really be settled or stable in that part of the world until Kurdistan, including Turkish Kurdistan, is independent.
Now we’re at the heart of the matter. If you want to argue that Kurdistan ought to be independent, then you’re on much stronger ground than “Turkey shouldn’t cross the border to fight it’s enemies, because it’s violating Iraq’s sovreignty.”
I happen to agree that Kurdistan should be an independent nation. The problem is, you don’t (or shouldn’t, at least) get independence by killing a bunch of civilians in the country you want to be independent from.
Ah yes, because a Kurdish war of secession against Turkey, plus a Kurdish war of secession against Iraq, plus a Kurdish war of secession against Iran, and quite likely a Kurdish civil war to decide who gets to run the resulting Kurdistan, is 100% guaranteed not to leave any lingering regional animosities. :dubious:
Oh hang on, they’d probably need to hack off a lump of Syria too. Still, it’s not as if the Syrians are going to mind, since all the neighbours are so generously giving up large chunks of their territory.
