1950s copy drama starring Beverly Garland. Exteriors were shot on location in New York, almost unheard of at the time, and the show tackled thorny issues and took them seriously. Easily a decade ahead of its time and still worth watching today.

    I know that some of the FX are clunky, but aside from the fact that a surprising number aren’t, the “pinball” plot style seemed made for the 90s (melodrama one week, farce another, social commentary another, parody of another work yet another, heavy or stark drama some weeks, and sometimes straight-up comedy, or even wish-fulfillment fantasy) and no real reason for one to follow the other seems made for the cultural Mulligan Stew of the 90s.

Plus, it was fun, and the 80s had been ridiculously didactic, with “very special episodes” coming in rapid succession. When Xena came along, we were starved for fun.
