Gilligan was the first mate’s last name. According to Sherwood Schwarrtz, creator of the series, early planning notes and press releases gave the character’s first name as ‘Willy’, although that detail never made it to the show.
Bob Denver sometimes joked that his character’s name was actually ‘Gil Eagan’, but when the Skipper was mad he called it out so quickly that it sounded like one word – ‘Gilligan!’

Longmire ran for six seasons – the first three on A&E; then after that network cancelled the show Netflix rescued it and produced three additional seasons before bringing the story to a satisfactory close. I had never seen it (or any other streaming services until three years ago, when my significant other dragged me kicking and screaming into the 21st century), but took to it quickly. It’s no longer available through Netflix, but is currently streaming on Peacock. I heartily recommend it.
