I just finished marathon I just finished marathoning Veronica Mars and actually really enjoyed it. With one caveat. Veronica and that douche bag Logan had anti-chemistry. Despite Logan’s claim that the romance was epic, The only thing epic was how much it sucked. He was a sociopathic moron who was also a spoiled rich boy. He had nothing to offer her. Don’t get me wrong, the actor was great, but the character sucked except in the first dozen or so episodes when he was a foil to Veronica.
It was clearly a romance the producers wanted us to believe in and I never once did even for a moment.
In the same vein there was Buffy/Angel…angel on his own in his own show was a damn cool character. Buffy on her own was a wonderful character. But put the two together and you had a big whiny angsty ball of suck. Even when they guest starred on each other’s show, Angel’s emotional maturity would drop below that of a spoiled eight-year-old girl.
On Lost, there was what’s her name with the doctor and the ConMan kept fighting over. She was a skank and and incredibly annoying character. Neither would have wanted her. The only reason that the characters would stay with her and keep fighting over her was producer Fiat.
Got any other examples of horribly mismatched TV couples that the show kept pushing?
I will never understand Mindy & Danny’s relationship on The Mindy Project. He was seriously mean to her and they have very little in common.
What pisses me off is that she is the writer and producer of the show, so no one was forcing it on her. She’s the one who came up with it and wrote it all.
THANK YOU, Fenris!!! I recently marathoned Veronica Mars (including the movie). Apparently the vast majority of VM fans loooove Veronica+Logan and I.just.do.NOT.get.it. Like, it goes beyond, “well, I don’t get it but I can see why others do.” I literally cannot comprehend why everyone apparently not only likes V+L but thinks that Logan isn’t a total dbag.*
I do think there’re juuuuuust enough instances where he chooses to do the right thing that he isn’t quite sociopathic. But that is hardly a great quality for a boyfriend! “Oh, he’s not a complete sociopath, so what a great catch!”
Well at least a couple years later Bob and Emily Hartley were able to share theirs!
Total sidetracking side note - a couple years back I binge watched The Bob Newhart Show and was blown away by how (in the first season only) Suzanne was really rocking the nightie decolletage - looked smokin hot in some of the bedroom scenes!
Helen Roper’s love for a wincing, cringing Stanley in “Three’s Company” was a love that knew no bounds - if those bounds were predicated on the desires of some gruesome, frumpy horndog.
The recent incarnation of Dallas was even more unbelievable than the original, what with the way the two cousins kept swapping mates regardless of whatever they had done to fuck them over. Forgiveness and acceptance has never been so boundless, not in this or any other universe!
Wholeheartedly agree re: Buffy and Angel. Them together was just a huge ball of mopey angst. There was never really any chemistry between them except that it was some sort of pre-ordained epic love for the ages. Angel and Cordy was a much better, more mature relationship, in my opinion. They brought out the best in each other and Cordy kept his brooding in check which was far more interesting to watch.
Chakotay and 7 of 9 on Star Trek Voyager. That came out of nowhere and made no sense. There was no chemistry there. Didn’t help that Chakotay was as dull a character you could ever create.
Now the Doctor and 7 of 9 had actual chemistry. There was clear groundwork being put into the show for their relationship which, ultimately, led nowhere. I guess 7 of 9 had to have that baby.
Robin and Ted on How I Met Your Mother. I mean, obviously. The show’s insistence that they were meant to be together - nine seasons of evidence to the contrary - made the entire series pointless, and caused large swatches of it to be utterly unwatchable in retrospect. Perhaps the worse example in television history.
I quite enjoy Longmire and have some doubts about his new love interest the Doctor from the therapy group. But as of the end of season 4 it looks like the Doc is going to die soon so no need to worry.
However what is the show up to with Deputy Vic? She is being portrayed as an obsessed, love sick, Bunnie Boiling Stalker with the emotional development of a 13 year old as she sleeps around hoping to make Longmire jealous while Longmire - looking and generally acting more like her grandfather - typically ignores her as she throws it into his (completely disinterested) face.
Maggie and Joel on ‘Northern Exposure’. Their antipathy was so intense and long-lasting. I guess the writers thought such deep emotions would be hilarious if switched around, flip the coin, and have them hook up. That scene creeped me out, that was a bad idea, and of course the relationship following was awkward and eventually failed. Better they should have stayed antagonistic. (I know things like this happen in real life and not every romance is all daisies, rainbows, and snuggly little kisses while walking hand in hand. Which is what we usually see on tv, and at the time it was unusual to see Maggie and Joel not go that route.)
Ugh. I stopped watching the show because of this. Danny is completely incompatible with her. And he keeps imposing his religion on her obnoxiously.
And I completely agree with the Buffy-Angel thing. First of all, the “one true love” curse was cheesy and dumb. Second, the fact that it kicked in specifically when they boned.
To be fair, it also kicked in when Angel and Cordy boned. True, it was all a simulation and took place entirely inside Angel’s head, but it did cause him to lose his soul.
