Twin Cities Dopers: Relocation question

Contrary to my long-term plans, I’m opting to relocate from Berkeley back to Saint Paul in order to avoid getting laid off. I’ve been looking at apartments on Craigslist, and I found one on Dayton’s Bluff that looks nice, but I’m wondering if the neighborhood is a little seedy. The other places I’m looking at are in St. Paul, south of 94, mostly along Grand avenue or on Cathedral Hill.

Let’s put it this way. About five years ago I worked as an armed guard and occasionally worked overnights at the Perkins in the Midway. Once when we ran into problems in the early morning hours and it took forever for the necessary several metric tons of cops to show up, one of them told me “After dark you’re pretty much on your own over here. We’re all over on the east side.”

Oh, I’d take unemployment here in Berkeley rather than live in the Midway… I checked the county sheriff’s crime reports, and the two big danger signs for the Dayton’s Bluff area seem to be breaking & entering, and aggravated assault. I think I’ll be sticking to Merriam Park/Cathedral Hill…

… and you mean, the cops are all busy chasing bad guys all over the east side. Got it. They’re not hanging out there because they’re scared of the Midway.

Exactly. Midway isn’t great, but it isn’t Frogtown or the east side.

Perkins has armed security?!

I was doing 12am to 5am shifts. We did all the Perkins in the TC’s but one (no idea which one that was). Until the late night server at that one walked out to the dumpster in the middle of the night and was raped. Then we did all of them.

Midway was pretty rough, fair amount of action. At Sunray, I just sat and read books all night.

Dayton’s Bluff can be sketchy, but it’s sort of block by block over there. Grand Ave/Cathedral Hill is generally more upscale, but sometimes bad things happen along certain stretches of Summit Ave at night.

What about Highland, Mac Groveland, or Tangletown?

I’d agree with this - with the “just West of Downtown St. Paul” area, it really depends on which block.
