I saw a screening of Twist of Faith while I was in Toledo a few weeks ago, at the University of Toledo. Cite for screening.
It’s a startling film about sexual abuse in the priesthood. Since this is Cafe Society and not The Pit OR G.D., I open this thread for others who have seen it who wish to discuss the film, and what they thought of it, how it handled the material/subject and if it engendered conversations with friends or family about the topic.
The film is mostly about a Toledo firefighter who alleges repeated sexual abuse at the hands of a Priest while he was in High School. I say alleged not because I doubt his words in the film, or in person ( he appeared with his wife and others, at the screening for a Q&A afterwards ), but because the Priest in question has never been legally charged with a crime at all.
It was deeply upsetting, but an extremely important film to see. I am glad I saw it. Anyone else seen this film? It was produced by HBO Films and was nominated for an Academy Award last year for Best Feature Length Documentary.
This level of honest filmmaking doesn’t get reached much these days. It was important that the film was made, and more important that a university showed it. The film could not be shown in Toledo- the theatre that booked it was pressured by the Toledo Archdiocese and withdrew the booking, essentially censoring it in it’s own town.
