Two Automotive Duds Turn 50

Earlier this year, the Edsel turned the big Five-O, and now it’s the Trabant’s turn. Most bizarre, however, is that folks are looking to revive the Trabant!

A Bavarian company that holds the licence to produce toy Trabant models is thinking of bringing the mythical car back to the road because its miniatures proved a sellout success.

“We have sold 100,000. It is a very emotional model,” Daniel Stiegler from toymaker Herpa told AFP.

He said the new model would look like the Trabant of yore, but with state-of-the-art technology under the hood and a price tag of 30,000 to 50,000 euros.

The company is looking for a producer to make a first run of 200 models.

“If that works, we will see if somebody like Volkswagen or BMW wants to bring out a new line. You have a new Beetle, why not a new Trabant?”

The Pinto also turned 35 on Sept 11th.

A Trabby just isn’t the same without that two-stroke engine.

Speaking of ancient German deathtraps, I’m still waiting for the new Vanagon/Bully. Anyone know how that one is coming?
