Two First Names

Since I’m neither a Will Ferrell fan nor a NASCAR fan, and in spite of holding John C. Reilly and Sacha Baron Cohen in a fair amount of esteem, I doubt if I’ll ever see Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) even when it’s available on cable.

However, I am curious what the source for Ricky Bobby’s name would be. It’s obviously a shot at the Jim Bob and Billy Bob and Bobby Ray and other assorted redneck names that seem to be used on any show to do with the rural South and even Southern politics. But if there’s a well known NASCAR star with two first names I’m having trouble thinking of who it could be. Sterling Marlin, maybe?

Be that as it may, and I would like to know who it is if you know, there are many famous people with two first names. How many can you come up with besides:

Jesse James
Frank James
James Joyce
Tina Louise
Ann Margret (or is it Ann-Margret?)
Alice Faye
Johnnie Ray
Ray Charles
Jerry Lewis
Steve Allen

We should be able to get 100 before slowing down.

(If you want to start using those with two last names, please start another thread. )

Patrick Stewart
French Stewart

Hmmm… wag, maybe something to do with Ricky Rudd and Bobby Labonte?

off for some light research

Btw, how about that Daytona finish yesterday? Any movie should have been so lucky as to have one guy crossing the line upside down and on fire. Ha!

Jason Alexander
William Christopher
Danny Thomas
Marlo Thomas
Cass Elliott
Chris Elliott

I sure hope they’re all celebs and not just people I know with a first name for a last name…

Hugh Laurie

Two from Fame:

Debbie Allen
Gene Anthony Ray had three first names

Bob Dylan

Tommy Lee

um…

it’s tough though; when is a first name a first name? For example, Russell is a first name, but I don’t think of people with Russell as a last name having a first name for a last name. Same with Lewis, Mitchell…

Billy Joel

Elton John

Brian May

Pete Rose

How 'bout some of the more feminine names?

I’ve known people whose last names were: Barbera, Valery, Lucy, Carroll, Becky, Cleo, Scarlet, Vivian, Marion.

And then there was Jacqueline Susann.

Can I get a ruling on George Harrison?

Well, since Harrison Ford works, I can see how that might fit. However, due to its relative rarity, I’d think Harrison would be more often thought of as a last name.

I had similar thoughts about Anderson Cooper and Desmond Llewellyn.

I want to know something. If “Ricky Bobby” is supposed to be making fun of the southern tendency to name people like Joe Bob and Mary Sue, why is “Bobby” his last name (as I get the impression from IMDB).

The southern, er, tradition is to give children two first names in addition to the family last name. The example of this that comes to mind is Billy Bob Thornton, and the fictitious Peggy Sue.
