There’s an insurance commercial on tv, featuring a car crash, that has the subtitle that goes something like “The French Connection, 1971 2004”. I know the movie from 1971 ok, but 2004? I went to IMDB and got this
What’s up with that?

Whatever that thing is you linked to in the Internet Movie Database, it has nothing to do with the television commercial for 21st Century Insurance that features a clip from the 1971 movie.

  1. The copyright was renewed when they used that bit in the commercial.
  2. Ther was a sequel with a memorable scene in which Popeye burns down a whorehouse.

The 2004 refers to the commercial’s copyright date, not the movie’s. The movie’s copyright registration doesn’t need renewal — the copyright term lasts 95 years from 1971 date of release.
