Two Great Movies

I watched two really great movies tonight while Jophiel was sleeping - Something Wicked This Way Comes and Ridicule, some French film he had lying around.

Something Wicked was my video. I’ve seen it many times before, but it’s always entertaining. Does anyone know if the Ray Bradbury story is much more different than the movie? I wouldn’t imagine so, because he wrote the screenplay, but I want to make sure I’m not missing some key points.

And has anyone else even heard of Ridicule? I was surprised - it was a French film with a happy ending. I think that’s got to be the first French film I’ve ever seen with a happy ending.

When are you going to realize being normal isn’t necessarily a good thing?

The novel Something Wicked This Way Comes is pretty close to the movie. Obviously they had to trim the story a bit to fit the length of a movie. You should read the book, and you should also read Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine, a similar book.

I saw Ridicule, (that’s the Patrice Leconte movie about a nobleman who tries to get Louis XVI to finance draining of a swamp), but I must honestly say that I can’t remember the ending being happy. I thought that he didn’t get the money for his project after all?

Or do you mean it’s because he finally got to marry the young girl who wanted to do underwater exploration?

I thought it was a happy ending because it was the best thing that could have happened. If he had gotten the money and been a favorite of Louis XVI, he and Mathilde would most likely have been killed along with the rest of the aristocrats. Either that, or they would have had to flee France. As it was, they got their swamp drained, they got to marry each other and they got to stay on their land when the revolution came because he did not succeed in what he wanted. So I see he and Mathilde being able to have a happy, long life together in a place they love as a very happy ending
