Two great songs in car advertisements.

I’ve been completely weirded out twice in two days – first “Unseen Sights” by Alias featuring the singer of The Notwist (a song that is about questioning the policies of the United States government, explicitly stated in the liner notes) being used in a commercial for some awful Pontiac car-shaped dreck, then “Mountain Song” by Jane’s Addiction being used for…something I didn’t see, but sounded like a car advertisement from the next room.

My favorite song in a car advert is still Nick Drake in that uh…I think…Volkswagon? Maybe? It was obviously ineffective on me as an advertisement, but it did make me steal all my husband’s Nick Drake CD’s and listen to them again.

But I have noticed that I’m getting old enough that my childhood and even “cool alternative” teenage stuff is ending up in advertisements. I nearly cried when I heard The Cure shilling Hewlett Packard, although they were damn cool ads.

I saw about three seconds of a car(?) commercial today featuring Devo’s “Uncontrollable Urge” - or at least the part that goes “Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah Yeah!” That was pretty cool, but unexpected.
