Two historically significant deaths

Miep Gies, the last surviving protector of Anne Frank, died at age 100 yesterday.

Last week, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person to survive the atomic bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, died at age 93.

I didn’t hear about Miep Gies - what an amazing person. I am fascinated by the stories of those who defied the Nazis at the risk of their own lives to save others. The Ten Boom family is another interesting group of people who defied a horrific regime to do what they knew was right. Thanks to people like Gies, many were able to avoid the camps, prisons, and ghettoes.

Miep Gies’ greatest gift wasn’t merely the lives she protected . . . most of whom didn’t survive . . . her greatest gift was in keeping Anne Frank’s diary safe, until the world was ready to read it. An amazing life, in both quality and quantity.
