Two movie recommedations needed - action/disaster & high school comedy

Better off Dead is very funny, it is more absurdist than most of the others listed.
Independence Day has alot of stuff blowing up in it.
StarShip Troopers might be something you both can like.

Thanks for recommending The Trotsky, Boyo Jim. I watched it this afternoon and loved it!

You’re welcome. Spread the word. Up the Revolution!

I would assume you’ve seen Real Genius? That’s college, but it’s brilliant.

For summer, since someone else suggested the very funny Summer School, how about Wet Hot American Summer? Meatballs?

Not always school-related, but in the general age range:

Valley Girl
Rock ‘n’ Roll High School
American Graffiti
I Wanna Hold Your Hand
The Last American Virgin (terrible title, but it really is good)

Does your gf like martial arts/police/gangster/shootout/us vs. them/HOLY SHIT! action movies? If so, you must seek out The Raid: Redemption, which, having just seen it, practically jumping in my seat every few seconds in breathless anticipation, awe, thrills, horror, suspense, and OHMYGOD!!!ness, it’s an incredibly bloody and violent, exciting and unbelievably wild ride. I love John Woo movies, but oh lord, this makes John Woo look like a schoolmarm. It is subtitled though.

For the high school genre, these are some of my (and my husband’s) favorites that aren’t already on the list:

Tucker and Dale vs. evil (more high school/horror/comedy cross over, but hilarious)
*The New Kid
*17 Again (which we accidentally watched and instantly became one of our most quotable movies ever)

One action/disaster movie not yet mentioned is The Day After Tomorrow.

LA destroyed by tornadoes; New York inundated and then frozen. And a truly awful movie, too boot.

Not a high school comedy, but a grad school comedy: The Last Supper.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.
“They’re beauticians!?”
“…not yet!”

How about One Crazy Summer, starring Jon Cusak.
Oh!
Also, in the action genre, let me put forth “Speed” (which surely she’s seen?), “Con Air,” and “Demolition Man” (the greatest movie of our time, nay, all time).

For the teen (dark) comedy, I highly recommend Drop Dead Gorgeous. It’s a mockumentary about a beauty pageant in Minnesota. Brilliant stuff.

All of my action flick suggestions have been listed.

Action:
I second Con Air.
Adding Face Off, True Lies
Teen:
The Goonies
Mean Girls
Thumbsucker
What A Girl Wants
(I love this movie and I don’t care who knows it)
Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead (really dated, but lots of fun)

Personally, I think True Lies is too good to be on a list of terrible action films. The other two, however… yeah baby!

For a bonus, the worst film in recent memory (possibly of modern times), though it’s quite a stretch to call it an action film… The Wicker Man, the remake with Nick Cage. Hilariously, hysterically, roll on the floor awful.
