Right, but that was just temporary. It only lasted until 1976, due to Gregg v Georgia. There were 25 executions so far this year alone:

That doesn’t address what I’ve said at all. Manson evaded the death penalty because of a mass communication. It was never back on the table for him. All of the people executed this year and the last several years weren’t in California. We don’t have it here de facto.

There’s more to the California story. Shortly after Manson (and Sirhan Sirhan) had their death penalty sentences commuted, due to California v. Anderson (a state supreme court decision), the California constitution was changed, by initiative ballot, to specifically state that capital punishment was not cruel or unusual. If I’m not mistaken, that is still the state of the state constitution. Since then there has been a lot of litigation on the issue, but I believe the current condition where no executions are being done is completely de facto and not de jure.
Depends on how de jure you consider an executive order by the Governor. Even with the 2019 moratorium, two people were still sentenced to death just last year.
I’ve known (and respected you) through your posts for a long time, but “commutation” is the reduction of a prison sentence or punishment. It is the SDMB after all. So, I’m just going to say: “Damn auto-correct!”

To jump in briefly with this… Between Lindsay Clancy and Nick Reiner, sadly, my vocabulary groweth with terms I didn’t realize existed. It’s scary to acknowledge this happens frequently enough that we need such terms:
filicide = when a parent kills a child
parricide = when a child kills a parent
(sigh)
Gagagoogooicide = when the baby kills the parent
(And siouxicide is when a Native American kills somebody)
Both of these are being a jerk in one way or another, especially in this forum and neither are remotely funny.
The googoogaga baby one trivializes intrafamily violence and is heartless and insensitive.
The Siouxicide is much worse. Bigoted, insulting, a racist slur against Native Americans. Unbelievably crass. Added insensitivity about suicide as a lethal mental illness~never should be called upon for a cheap laugh.

Agreed. In fact, it doesn’t necessarily mean it fixes them at all. Sadly, while they were rightfully spending all that money on him, they should have gotten a restraining order and spent money on security.
