Hello all tivo lovers, I have a few questions about setting a tivo to record while away from home.
First, does anyone know if it is possible to program a tivo while away from home without having a static IP? I am pretty sure you can log into a home computer and control it, but do you need a static IP to do this?
Second, does anyone know of any command-line programs to program a tivo? This is my backup plan incase the first cannot be done.
Unless there is some Tivo-specific issue which I’m missing, this should allow you to reach your computer from anywhere in the world (as long as it’s turned on and connected to the Internet, obviously) even if your provider changes your IP around every now and then.
By the way, if you’re going to permanently connect your PC to the Internet while on vacation, please invest in a good hardware firewall and make sure that Windows Update is set to run automatically.
Right, the main point of “remote programming” your tivo, is that you’re not connected to your tivo. You connect to the tivo service, log in, pick a tivo (if you have more than one) and schedule a recording. Then the next time your tivo updates itself (which IIRC is one a day on modem, or one an hour on broadband), it will download the schedule you set up.
To enable command line stuff on your tivo, you need to hack it by pulling the harddrive. There are tons of forums out there for that sorta thing, but I like my tivo working, so I never tried.
The same service is available for Replay TV which is what I have, I have two on my home network I can also schedule recordings between the two in seperate rooms.
