I have a standard 2 bowl stainless steel kitchen sink. Today, I decided to finally install a garbage disposal. I installed it on the left side. The right side sink has a trap directly under the basket. I put a trap coming out of the disposal because it was the easiest thing to do. So now I have 2 traps that both feed into the same drain line. Is there any problem with this arrangement? I can’t think of any but I know that disposals aren’t usually plumbed this way.
I believe that’s perfectly within code. Just make sure that if you ever do decide to go to one trap, that both drains connect before the trap. Some people will connect one of the drains (usually the disposal) after the trap which defeats the purpose.
Also, if you have a dishwasher, it connects to the disposal and be sure to knock out the plug, you can’t see it, but it’s in there. If you don’t connect the dishwasher to the disposal, make sure it’s also connected before one of the traps and not after it.
Thanks Joey P. I did remember to knock out the dishwasher plug. I saw a very thorough youtube video that explained everything except for the plumbing piece.
I’m not a plumber. I’ve always heard two traps on one sink would cause vapor lock which makes it drain slow.
Perhaps more knowledgeable people can weigh in.
If no one does than the handyman’s rule applies. If it ain’t broke don’t mess with it.
If your sink drains ok, then it is ok. You may experience clogging in a year or two as the grease builds up in those two traps. You can cross that bridge then.
Yes, it’s a problem. What can happen is that water draining from one side can siphon out the water in the other side’s trap leaving it dry. Then you effectively no longer have a trap there and sewer gases can back up into your kitchen.
