type of map?

I once saw a map of the county I live in that listed the names of the land owners. It was interesting to see who the big land owners were. Can someone tell me the name of the map of this type and where I can get one. (Elkhart County, Indiana) Thanks-J

Oh Boy, something that I really know.

The maps that you are looking for are called Cadastral Maps or sometimes Plat Maps. They are usually set up for subdivisions or development as part of the planning.

But most often they are used by the Taxing Authority of the Municipal District. (In your Case, Elkhart County, Indiana)

The easiest place to access is either at the Recorder’s Office, the Assessor’s Office, or some other Taxing Authority. (You see, they need to know who owns the land in order to tax them and to collect the taxes so that the Government can continue to operate!)

Since they are public records, they should be open for public inspection during normal business hours.

Check with your local County Government as I am not sure of the laws currenty in Indiana (left 30 years ago.)

And if you are looking for a smaller area check your City or Township Government.

Thanks for the info, by your name mapsmith, I guess this question was right up your alley!

And don’t try to pull the same trick Jack Nicholson did with those map books as he did in Chinatown

“Sir, this is a hall of records, not a lending library.”
