Tyre Nichols death - discussion as the video comes out

Yes but I responded to your suggestion that cops rely on something other than physical strength. The floor is yours. You are now the Internet Memphis Chief of Police and you just banned clubs, mace, and tasers.

That’s fair. Let’s say someone was charged with felony possession as a very young adult. They have been clean for years, and even if they weren’t it was a marijuana charge that wouldn’t even be prosecuted anymore. Should they be excluded? I’d say definitely not based solely on that. So, your point is made.

One would hope a law enforcement degree has a curriculum focused on law enforcement procedures. If that’s eliminated as a minimum then we’re left with 5 years of “hands on” experience.

…there is nothing to suggest that “a law enforcement degree” was required. Just either an associate’s degree or 54 college credit hours.

Well, beyond common sense, no. But if your intent is police work and the city want’s police officers the degree tends to line up with the job skills sought after.

…but it wasn’t a requirement. And while “the degree tends to line up with job skills sought after”, it wouldn’t make a potential candidate more suitable based solely on the entrance requirements, wouldn’t prevent the incident that took place here from happening, and we don’t actually know if anyone in the force even has “a law enforcement degree”.

The requirement here was either an associate’s degree or 54 college credit hours. That’s it.

Lots of colleges and universities offer degrees in criminal justice, e.g., University of Massachusetts, as well as Suffolk University, Mount Wachusett Community College, Anna Maria College, Northeastern University – and that’s just a few of the Massachusetts institutions. Lots more in other states.

You know Google is there- there are a dozen cites for the same thing. Pick the one you like.

Do you have a cite that disproves mine?

Since you say we can pick a cite we like, Is there a reason you picked that site in particular?

This has probably already been posted, but I wonder what other past complaints have been lodged against the SCORPION team, and if there’ll be serious investigation into them.

Does it matter? First cite after Fox news, I won’t like to Fox. There were many. Pick one.

And how many complaints aren’t made, out of fear or retaliation.

If you know that filing a complaint won’t result in any discipline or change, and it may result in those you complained about finding out and coming after you, people are less likely to try.

Complete out of left field speculation, but I wonder if Tyre had a complaint against one or more of these cops.

…I don’t need to.

You should note that while your choice of citation here gave me pause, I didn’t dismiss it out of hand.

What I did was that I read it, I quoted from it, and made a case that these “lowered standards” would not have made any material difference here.

It may (or may not) be relevant if any of the five received a felony waiver. But nothing in your cite gave any indication that any of them had.

Which leaves just no longer requiring an associate’s degree or 54 college credit hours, instead also allowing five years of work experience.

So it isn’t up to me to prove anything. It’s over to you to demonstrate how having an associate’s degree or 54 college credit hours would have made a material difference here: and thats even assuming that any of the five didn’t qualify under the old criteria.

Your own cite disproves your cite.

Hopefully, old and new complaints will be looked into now.

EMT’s have been fired as well as additional officers in the vicinity.

I’m wondering if the street camera was monitored at the time and if they can go after that person too. It seems to me that was a controllable camera so it’s highly likely that it was deliberately pointed at Tyre while he was being beaten.

How so?

it’s a half dome camera cover that is traditionally one that has a swiveling camera inside.

View of street camera that recorded the beating.

But do you think there’s somebody sitting by manning it 24-7? Or perhaps it’s on automatic?

Even if there was someone controlling it at the time, why would they be in trouble for pointing the camera at the crime in process? The crime being the assault and murder of Nichols by the gang of officers.

What could this hypothetical camera operator have done differently other than making sure the crime was recorded? Call some different police?
