I remember hearing that song, or one very similar, about 10 years ago and it makes me movw just as much as the first time I heard it. Something about that just touches me…
About this thead I think there are 2 main issues:
A: the paperwork regarding wages and benefits
B: the actions of each government.
Yes the Consul broke the law in regards to minimum wage and taking the passport. The Consul may have been looking at this situation as ‘this is how it’s always been done’. I dunno and as there will be no court case I doubt I will ever know.
I do agree that the US State Dept might have acted heavy handed which may have forced a response from the Indian Government. For reasons unknown neither side confides in me so I don’t know why they did what they did.
Either/any way I believe it will go back to mostly status quo with a few changea.
To a point. When you are a guest in a country, you should follow the law, possibly more scrupulously than the locals do if there is widespread law-breaking occurring. Things get grey when the laws widely broken are, to you, clearly “bad” laws. But tax laws, however onerous, I don’t think qualify. If the recap of he article is accurate, then these people deserve arrest in the manner customary in India, and trial. They should have either followed the law and paid appropriate taxes, or chosen not to work in the school. Both valid choices. Committing tax fraud because “everyone is doing it” is not valid.
Update on Ms. Khobragade: she’s been suspended from her job in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for both speaking to the media about her run-in with the law in the United States, and also failing to report to her government that she obtained U.S. passports for her two children. I guess she doesn’t feel responsible for telling the truth to either the U.S. or the Indian governments. Color me shocked - shocked - that this arrogant diplomat is in hot water again.
Meanwhile, U.S.-Indian relations are on the upswing. Obama is visiting India in January for Republic Day. PM Modi visited Washington in September.
