No. They’re both tennis instructors, but they’re not retired ATP/WTA stars or anything. So there are a lot of people who feel that he should be working with someone who really knows how to handle life on the pro circuit and who can coach him more objectively. He just turned 22. That being said, Young has been playing well and there’s reason to think he’s really going to deliver on his potential now. He just won the second set against Chela, so he’s close to reaching the fourth round of a major for the first time.
Big win for Young, who could play Andy Murray in the next round. Del Potro is having trouble against Gilles Simon - Simon leads two sets to one. Del Potro was down a break but fought back, and he just escaped another difficult game on serve. It’s 4-3 Del Potro in the fourth.
We’re going to the day session tomorrow. I guess we probably won’t see Federer or Serena, but going from match to match and getting up close is always fun.
Del Potro was just too tired to pull that out. And Simon has been playing really well lately.
I didn’t see Nadal cramp up in the post-match interview, but that’s not a good sign. Djokovic is still cruising along. I’m interested to see if Murray can turn it around after a poor showing last round. Fed is still a wild card.
Ohhhhhh, so jealous! Watching the matches live is so different then watching on tv. Even if you don’t see Fed or Serena, I can’t think of a better way to spend a day off! Have fun!
That’s how it looked. Sometimes I worried about Del Potro’s confidence, but I think the big problem was that he isn’t quite back in grand slam tournament shape.
It was a hot day today and he didn’t have the smoothest match. I don’t think it reflects badly on his health, but he could use some easy ones. He gets Muller in the next round.
So far he appears to be beating Lopez’ brains in. He took the first set 6-1.
It should be great. They just released the preliminary schedule (I didn’t know there WAS a preliminary schedule) - and obviously this late in the tournament, you can only see so many big names if you aren’t in Ashe. But we could see Tipsarevic-Ferrero, where you get a surprising veteran against the eclectic guy with all the tattoos. Djokovic-Dolgopolov could be fascinating even though there’s a strong chance Djokovic wins in a rout. And I see Bhupathi and Paes are playing on the Grandstand. That’s very tempting.
Murrary is through. Lopez acted injured…maybe just tired. A scare for Nadal. OWCH!
Have fun tomorrow Marley23
Awesome tiebreak in set two of Stosur-Kirilenko. It’s 11-11 now! This isn’t on TV unless you have the Tennis Channel, but you can watch on the US Open site.
And Kirilenko takes the set 17-15! They’re going three, and it’s up to Stosur to bounce back.
Stosur is killing me!!! Just finish it for god’s sake!!!
I really like Tipsy. He isn’t the best player on tour, but he is entertaining. If Djokovic continues to play like he has, it will be a pretty quick three setter. Not a big fan of Paes. Good player, but a bit of a jack ass. Do Sock and Oudin play tomorrow? I think they would be fun to get to see.
And she did it!
As a matter of fact, they do. Maybe we’ll look for them on Court 11. Right now I’d be happy to see any of the Armstrong matches (Tipsarevic-Ferrero, then Djokovic-Dolgopolov, and Petkovic-Suarez Navarro), the Bhupathi-Paes match sometime around 2 on the Grandstand, Sock and Oudin sometime after 3:30, and Peschke-Srebotnik on the new Court 17.
Stosur’s panicked rabbit act is getting old. She needs to learn how to close out important matches or she needs to go home. I’m sick of rooting for her, only for her to freeze when she sees the finish line. Kirilenko, when down, poured it on. THAT’s how a champion plays.
I could have watch that match all night and been happy. But, nooo. They had to keep bouncing around. Argh!
Nadal looked just like my friend when she had a back spasm after a match. She sank to the floor, too. Of course, that usually means that she’s out for a week or two. Don’t know how Nadal can just keep coming back from that. He seemed embarrassed by it.
Murray’s game is so well-rounded, but like Stosur, he just can’t seem to close out the big games. I’d love the US Open to be the breakthrough tournament for both of them. Of course, they’ll have to get through Williams and Djokovic…
After years of seeing no one but Federer play, I’m surprised that they haven’t covered him much at all. And I wonder how they decide who gets the marquis night match. Here in Cincinnati, it favored the Americans in the early rounds (Black, Roddick, Fish) and then defaulted to the top seeds in the later rounds.
Watching the Zvonareva match on TTC, it cemented how much I heart Navratilova as a commentator. Re Lisicki: “She’s not the swiftest of players.” “Who knows what she was thinking when she decided on that shot.” Too bad Tracy Austin was her co-commentator. My friend, who was over to watch tennis, said, “Who is that? She sounds like a Munchkin.” The rest of the night I had to hear him sing, “We represent the Lollipop Guild.” whenever Austin spoke.
Should be some good matches coming up! Oh, except NYC tends to get Cincinnati weather a day or two later. And we had an all day and all night soaking rain beginning Sat night into Sun.
I actually thought Stosur did a great job last night and I wondered if she could be putting her reputation behind her. She failed to close out on some match points during the second-set tiebreak, but she got a break early in the third set and closed it out.
I meant to add that Zvonareva looked excellent in the yesterday’s night match, although Lisicki’s performance was really disappointing. At this point the only real question on the women’s is whether anyone can beat Serena. She’ll play Ivanovic next, and then either Schiavone or Pavlyuchenkova. She could meet Zvonareva in the finals.
djokovic does seem to be in the federer camp when it comes to post match interviews. he just doesn’t have the grace or humility to not sound like an arsehole. i really hope nadal can come through to win. he’s really fighting to find some form, and i would love it if he can come to terms with the stranglehold djoko’s got over him, but he’s got to get there first too. he’ll get stretched all the way if he does manage it, that’s for sure.
Even though she pulled out a win, her own tentative play and errors led to the third set, which put another hour of pounding on her body. When you’re competing at this level, there is a huge advantage getting things done as quickly as possible. Time after time, we’ve seen players rally back and force a 3rd/5th set, only to fold like pup tents in their subsequent match.
Time will tell.
…But now I see that Schiavone is still in it. Have they covered any of her matches? I love me some Schiavone. Another win would be great for her!
I’m so fickle.
Can Fish actually beat Tsonga? They’re both the owners of one set in this match, but it really looked like Fish had to work much harder for the points he was winning than Tsonga for his.
“I don’t speak French dumb ass.”
Did anyone else hear this during the Fish/Tsonga match or am I just going more crazy?
