Ubuntu 16.04

The newest long term stable release of buntu dropped yesterday, with the usual caveats of not installing it on a production machine just yet.

Previous to installing it on a laptop drive, I am currently running 14.04 on the main pc, till now. At this very moment , the system is in the process of updating to 16. First I tried to update via downloading an iso and burning it to a disk, and that got me the fresh install on the laptop, but for some reason the pc would not accept the boot loader from the dvd.

I checked and I downloaded the correct 64 version, same as I was running with 14.04 and then tried the update way, still no go. Seems that 14 wont get the update notification until the summer, and I used a method through the command line to finally get it to update.

So far on the laptop, other than being able to change the task bar location to the bottom, seems to be happening, so most of the new stuff should be under the hood. I have just ab out downloaded the new packages, so then a bit to install and reboot.

Will post back if it broke the system, lol

Goddammit, I load up 16.04 and the straightdope blows up. Let this be a lesson when you do an upgrade.

But seriously this was a case of being able to say that this did not go as planned. With all my stuff on external hard drives, doing a nuke and pave was not as painful as it was in years past, and I am currently running 15.10 for a bit, until 16 gets a bit more mature.

So despite intel being supported out of the box, neither my video card (onboard) or sound card ( likewise) was not detected and its gonna be a few days till that gets sorted out, according to intels website.

I really liked that taskbar at the bottom of the screen, its amusing to read that it took six years to make that an option. Before I was running Cairo-dock to get the same effect, but using something that takes up no ram was a prime concideration.

And so, the laptop was flawless while the PC had problems.

If your not used to upgrading buntu distros, this one might be problematic.

I did a clean install on a micro-pc I’m using as a router, other than some issue with iptables that blocked all traffic I haven’t had an issue.

I didn’t research the iptables issue, I just installed ufw and everything started working. Next is squid and squidguard.

Yeah, it went great on the laptop, and I figured an intel 64 desktop pc would have been just as smooth. I even downloaded the image twice, to see if that was the problem.

I’m planning on installing the desktop version on an older laptop later this week. I’ve been resisting Ubuntu since we mostly use Centos at the office but some of our developers swear by it so I’ve decided to try it out.

I hope things go fairly smooth searching the net for fixes isn’t as much fun as it used to be.

I think I’ll wait for you guys to find all of the bugs first. My Linux box is pretty much just a backup these days, but I have used it for some contracts in the past so I’m hesitant to risk breaking it.

Hi folks,

I do my Linuxing in a VM using Parallels for Mac. Any word on how 16.04 works as a guest OS in Parallels?
