Has anybody upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu yet? I’ve just finished the install, and apart from a small snag with the graphics (I had to edit out a line in the X.org conf file in order to get the nvidia driver to load) it looks pretty impressive.
For the first time in the history of the universe, Ubuntu’s found my laptop’s inbuilt wireless card and correctly installed it (some shitty Broadcom card). The network management has been unified, there’s a very noticeable speed improvement for me, especially with compiz-fusion (no more stuttering, even across dual monitors) and the new GUI is only slightly different but looking a lot better (progress bars being most notable).
Thoughts?
I’ve had two minor issues. The wireless indicator light blinks instead of staying lit steadily when connected. This actually an improvement from the last release where the light wouldn’t come one at all.
Also I can’t get the network manager applet to display in the status region. There’s probably an easy fix for it, I just haven’t had time to research it.
Other than that everything worked out well. I’ve always been leary about OS upgrades but Ubuntu has always worked out well. I only wish I had a better graphics card in my laptop so I could take advantage of some of the fancier compiz effects.
Gnome Network Manager has never worked well with my Dell laptop’s wireless, or after waking up from suspension. I ended up ditching it in favor of wicd which just plain works.
8.10 has done something funky with my video card (nvidia GeForce 7300), and now it’s no longer 3-d accelerated. It says I’m still using the proprietary drivers, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. I tried reverting to the previous kernel so I could get the older drivers back, but that’s not working either.
Other than that, I haven’t really experienced any major changes with 8.10. I sure was looking forward to OOo v3.
I booted my laptop (currently running Fedora 9) with the Live CD. When Ubuntu 8.10 did not connect to my wireless via the Atheros wifi card, I ejected the CD and quit.
