UEFA Euro 2024

I must confess I’m rooting for England in this final (I feel dirty), for 2 reasons:

  1. I know how it feels for a football-obsessed nation to go many years without winning anything, I think it’s time the gods of football take mercy on them.
  2. In the unlikely case that Argentina wins today I’d prefer to face England because Messi has never played even a friendly against them, it would be epic.

Will there be a game between the winners of the Copa and Euro? I didn’t know this, it must be a first.

Are you serious?
There have been several attempts to make it work, the most recent was in 2022, the finalissima! It was played in Wembley, Argentina 3 - Italy 0.
Watching that game I started to believe that we may win the World Cup, I remember cursing Messi and company for making me hope again, because it’s the hope that kills you.

Sorry, any attempts at establishing such a game eluded me, never heard of it or don’t remember. Don’t know why, you all know how deep I’m into football.

Twelve minutes in and it’s been nothing but Spain swarming England’s goal.

Just what I had expected, England parking the bus and hoping for the counter attack.

Another Shakespeare production.
Those English boys sure like lying on the grass.

I’ve never heard of it either, if that’s any consolation!

Kane gets the BS yellow.

Disappointing first half, but not surprising.

England’s usual game plan. Southgate must have told them he wasn’t happy with that good first half vs Netherlands.

And Rodri is out. This could hurt Spain’s game.

ETA: or not! 1-0 Spain.

Beautiful goal by Williams!

Also beautiful assist by Yamal.

Spain firing on all cylinders now!

I wonder what the coach told them in the locker room

Could be the first time England ever lose a semi or final inside 90 mins (I’m not counting 1968 because that really wasn’t a proper finals tournament).

England tries to take back some modicum of control of the ball but Spain sometimes practically locking them near their goal.

Wow, that was a fine attempt by Bellingham.

ETA: ooh, and a great save by Pickford.

ETA2: Now we have a game!
