Daniel: dating Connor Owen’s ex. True wuv. Hiding it.
Suzuki: Flamer gossip queen turns out to be a regular family man.
Wili & Connor: Connor seems to be in wuv, but Wili is showing signs of business first, and he’s going to get hurt.
Marc: pissed off he’s going to school but Wili threw him under the bus. Yet, she turns and puts him in charge of an important client meeting. Where’s Marc’s boyfriend?
Betty & sister: fighting over taking care of Ignacio. Ignacio hires a home nurse, but Betty decides to move back home anyway. Stupid! Who is the home nurse going to be? Hot female for Ingacio, or hot guy for Betty & Hilda? Who is Amanda going to roomie with?
I still watch the show, but it’s lost a lot of momentum this year. The story arcs were too late in coming and then weren’t that interesting (love triangles… yawn).
LOVED the Suzuki St. Pierre twist though.
The other night’s “me me me me me me me me me me” fantasy video of Jesse was also great.
They need to court their core audience again with more Justin and Marc/Cliff storylines (I know they broke up, but that’s easily resolved).
They seem to forget that Marc and Betty are in a very highly demanding academic-school like program and thus would have almost no time to socialize in addition to the full-time job and grad-school like workload.
Christine is apparently going for the Guinness Book of World Records longest pregnancy award. I assumed there’d be an arc there- that either it turns out to be her husband’s baby or she flees with it.
I think Alexis added a lot more to the show than I realized. Her departure was when it really went downhill. And Gio’s- can’t believe they didn’t work him back in (though the actor may not have wanted to move to New York).
Anyway, while once a great show they now seem to be phoning it in. I hope they turn it around, introduce some new friction or interesting new characters. Bring Patty Lupone back at the very least, or make Bernadette Peters a regular. They’re obviously going for an Ignacio romance with the new nurse, but thereagain- unless they go on a killing spree, yawn. The answer to the doldrums the show’s in aren’t romantic.
What do you think about the Jesse character as a whole? I have never been impressed with him and thought Betty was a total dweeb for even considering she would want to have a thing with him. She was fawning over him like a “nerd girl lusts over popular musician” high school drama.
I am very glad it ended with her finally realizing he was just a selfish flirt, but that took waaaaaaay too long and was way too painful to figure out.
I’m glad to see Marc and Amanda living together because I think they’re tres cute together (Jack and Karen, the younger years) but I could see Marc moving in a mile away.
I do miss Cliff, tho. Other than Hilda and Ralph Macchio, I thought he was the yummiest character on the show!
My wife and I can be long-suffering fans, but we’ve given up. Betty never learns anything and is constantly surprised by circumstances she’s thrown in. This no longer makes her naive; it makes her dumb. Daniel’d a dud, yet they keep trying to make us feel for him. Wili is fun but her machinations now seem boiler plate. Claire, Christine & Justin are so on the margins to be rendered irrelevant. And I thought they could never do anything to stop Hilda from being hot, but they’ve managed to do that this year, too. Marc & Amanda are the only reasons to watch the show (for the amusement factor), which did indeed take a hit when it lost Gio & Alexis. There’s enough on Thursday now to keep us engaged, so we’re done with the whole thing.
Oh, been there done that. Those two are adorable together as friends and coworkers, but living together is going to be a disaster.
In general, the show is pretty formulaic. It’s based on a soap opera so we’re always going to have doomed romance and the occasional mystery subplot. What keeps me with the show is the snappy dialogue, which hasn’t faltered that much.
We will need a continuous influx of fresh characters.
I don’t know how long I can look at Betty’s braces and bangs without booking a flight to New York and beating up some producers. She has to make some progress on those fronts eventually. Her choice of wardrobe is enough to keep her chunky Ugly Betty.
Oh, I didn’t say it before but I kept laughing out loud every time Amanda thought Betty was in the hospital due to her diet, instead of Ignacio.
While at her best Betty is an incredible assistant, some of her screw ups this year would get her fired by most bosses:
-Letting her blackberry be stolen by the competition
-Letting the Halston dress be stolen by the Blackberry thief (though I wondered at the time why not just press charges- the girl’s easily I.D.'d and that’s a many thousand dollars gown so we’re not talking petty larceny)
-Forgetting to send the flowers to her boss’s girlfriend
-Using MODE name and clout to get out of an expensive meal (speaking of “saw that one coming”)
And others- it’s beyond wacky and just pure carelessness. Originally she was propping up Daniel but now it’s reversed.
Also, you wouldn’t have to be Hitler to throw Amanda out on her ass. I consider myself a reasonably nice person and can even be a pushover to someone in need, but the first time they don’t pay their share of the rent and yet insult me, aw Heyull naw. There’s the door, you have parents somewhere in the metro area and if you don’t want to sponge off them or a sugar daddy then I understand the subway’s lovely this time of year. Of course sitcom characters put up with a lot more crap than most would (Hank Hill would have shot Dale a dozen times by now, Dorothy would have put Sophia back in the nursing homes several times, Dr. Weston of Empty Nest would have gotten a restraining order against his neighbor Charlie, etc.)
Speaking of, Amanda’s father is a plotline that, like many others (Ignacio’s wife’s first-husband’s presumed murder [in his sister’s house no less], Ralph Macchio’s appearance, Henry’s baby mama drama, Gio [yeah, he’s irked at Betty, but you’d think they’d still have some contact], etc.) that they’ve just let drop.
Reminded me of the first season where they kept referring to Justin as “Betty’s son”. (That’s something else I’d like to see- Justin and Marc work well together [in the mentor/mentee avuncular way, not the “Catch a Predator” way] and I’d like to see them interact again.)
The “OMG I thought you were like, 30,” gag is always good.
Marc & Justin having an actual adventure would be fun. I’m sure they could come up with something those two would be uniquely qualified to handle, or at least a mystery for them to get entangled in.
Justin seems to be growing, and he looks about old enough now for him to hang out with Marc and not alarm the “Catch a Predator” crowd. Maybe one of Marc’s school assignments could be to take on a protege or something.
Justin (Mark Indelicato) is about 9 feet tall, but only 14 years old, so unfortunately he needs to wait a few years. It would be a sweet episode though if he came onto Marc and Marc did the right thing (even though tempted).
Last night, I watched the most recent episode - or at least most of it. at about 40 minutes, something went odd with my TiVo, and I had twenty minutes of a picture of a ferry on tape.
And I didn’t really care. I hate the current Betty storyline and watching her go back and forth with band-guy was lame. Also, her family is annoying me. I can only watch so much of the Daniel/Molly/Willi/Connor quadrangle. And…I’m not sure what else there is. They’ve run out of plot.
They need to bring back something. I’m just not sure what.
I hope not, he’s an awful, awful, boring character. I hate him and am glad he’s gone. Besides, Betty ‘friending’ him on facebook was her way of finally saying she’s over it.
I finally watched our DVR recording last night. It WAS a worthily soap-opera plot. But…
They had to destroy Connor to do it. His character in this episode was…somebody else. Not the Connor we’ve been watching. His motivation sucked. I could have gotten behind “Connor and Molly are scamming Mode” (and I actually kind of wish Molly had been in on it) if they’d actually given us a couple of episodes, at least, to hint at it. But it was like this all came BAM out of the blue…he hates Daniel? Funny, he turned to Daniel when he thought Molly was seeing someone (before he figured out that someone was Daniel). That’s not “hate”…that’s not even “covering up hate”.
I like this Wili, though. Much better than the cartoony Cruella DeVille they had her as in the 2nd season.
That could still be a cool twist- she’s not really dying, but preparing for her own faked-death/getaway to join Connor. Then once with him, since she’s not wanted (being under a new identity and presumed dead in her old) she could scam Connor, leave him broke, and come back to Daniel.
I like that Willi is actually taking a motherly interest in her child. (Refresh my memory: it was her egg wasn’t it? So the child is biologically her’s?)
I read somewhere that Mark and Amanda are going to give Betty a makeover when she meets her new boyfriend (sports guy)'s mom (Christine Baranski) in an upcoming episode. Maybe the bangs will finally go.
I think they need to wrap the show. I am not a soap-opera watcher, and having improbability follow improbability with no resolution doesn’t work for me. I’ve gotten so that I just don’t like anyone but Justin any more. When he gave up his Fashion Week tickets, I remembered why he was worth it.
It has always been a soap opera lol. That’s the whole point - it’s based on a telenovela (Spanish soap opera) and it has always purposefully had that element as part of the show.
