My 16 year old brother, who started sixth form this school year quit in February to look for a job, but as that has proved unsuccessful he is going back into full-time education next school year. My mother, who recieves benefits for him, is losing them in June (or July, I can’t recall). Will my mother have the benefits started again after he goes back into full-time education or does it look like my brother is going to be paying her from his part-time job forever more?
Do you just mean Child Benefit, or others as well? If it is just Child Benefit, then AFAIK anyone under 19 and in full time education would be eligible, I don’t think the fact that there was a break would make any difference.
But, talk to the people who administer it would be the best advice. It used to be the Benefits Agency, but I just searched and looks like it is now the Inland Revenue link
Also, ask your mother to enquire of the nearest Citizens Advice Bureau. Find by looking in local phone directory or look at http://www.nacab.org.uk/
I had a notion there was to be some kind of bursay for young people remaining at school, but, although I have tangled much with the benefits people, I don’t know anything about that age group, I’m afraid.
Yes, true, this is the EMA. BBC Story on it here and the website is here . From a quick browse, it may not apply in this situation as Rising Force 's brother will presumably be over 16 by the time the next school year starts. But I may be wrong and it’s worth checking out in any case.
