Forgive me for posting such a UK-specific question on this forum, but I know that the UK dopers are a knowledgeable and helpful bunch, so it seemed worth a try
If you tell your employer that you want to leave and are looking for another job, would that be fair grounds for dismissal under UK law? (assuming that you continued to perform your duties adequately in the meantime)
I’m thinking that surely it wouldn’t be (I hope not, anyway ), but I can’t find any confirmation of that.
Was “looking for another job”? explicitly stated as the reason? Was something like “using company resources for non-company business in violation of company policy” a factor?
Also, do you have an employment contract? If this is addressed in the contract, that statement will govern.
IANAL, but telling your employer you are looking for another job would not be reason for dismissal. They might try and get you on some other pretext if they wanted to get rid of you, but it would be up to them to try and persuade you to stay if they wanted to keep you.
Employment contracts would not prevent you looking for another job, but they might restrict the type of job you could get, eg not working for a rival company.
Using company rersources to look for another job may be grounds for dismissal though.
