UK Dopers...excited about American football this weekend?

In case you haven’t heard…the Miami Dolphins are playing the New York Giants at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Apparently, it’s a sell-out.

Is there any buzz in London about this? Did all the tickets go to American ex-pats?

You mean they’ve already determined the winner?

I’ve not heard anything - no buzz, no nothing - but American football isn’t really my cup of tea. Besides, I’m at a party on Saturday and recovering on Sunday.

First I’ve heard of it, too. Probably lots to expats, lots as corporate freebies, etc.

It’s been on the news a few times. I am meh.

I do wonder who it’s aimed at. It’s not like there’s a shortage of live NFL matches on Sky, should we want to watch them.

Is this part of the baseball thing?

Is that the netball one?

In all seriousness, I understand it’s a little late now that the tickets are all sold out, but being at an American football game live is a completely different experience from seeing it on TV. Just like being at an Association football game live is a completely different experience from seeing it on TV. I don’t know how much ticket scalping goes on over there, but if you have access to tickets or a fair amount of spare money on Sunday, I really think Londoners who are big sports fans ought to try. You might like it. You never know. Even if you don’t, it’ll be a great place to get drunk and insult Americans.

Dollis Hill.

I am an American living in London who was, until I moved here, a big American football fan (Bills season ticket holder during their glory years). I haven’t followed it much since I’ve been here though, because it’s not really that easy. I only found out about this through the US CNN site a few days ago. I was surprised that it was sold out and I had not heard a thing.

I think it has been lost in the shuffle amongst the Euro 2008 (football) qualifiers, the Rugby World Cup final, and the Brazilian Grand Prix (in all of which the English competitors lost - this was a bittersweet week in English sport).

You’re right, they were unfortunate, given that this thing must’ve been planned 18-24-36-whatever months in advance. They Euro 2008 fixtures probably weren’t even set, the rugby was on nobody’s radar, the F1 title is always decided by the end of August, isn’t it? October was bound to be a quiet month? (Don’t forget the Champions League, too, Arsenal’s seven goals taking up a few pages and minutes which, with a 0-0 draw, might’ve been given to the men in helmets.)

First I’ve heard about it. They’ve sold 90,000 seats? To whom?

Champions League stuff is always going on in October, international qualifiers were surely slated years in advance.

[ETA] Oh. I get the previous post now. :smack:

What the hell are you talking about?

I used to watch the NFL every year when it was on free-to-air TV here and I got to quite like the game and know the rules fairly well and so on. They had an NFL game here in Sydney a few years ago so me and some like-minded friends went along.

It took four hours to play the “one hour” game, and I think it was the dullest 4 hours of my life. I don’t think there there were more than two minutes in a row of uninterrupted play at any time. They actually stopped play for ad breaks.

IMO the game is designed solely for viewing on TV and going to it live is a waste of life.

I think everybody’s being nice, and not starting a game while the thread is still serious, so I’ll be lenient :slight_smile:Mornington Crescent (game) - Wikipedia

YMMV, apparently. I’m the polar opposite: I used to love the game when I went to see it live a lot, and now that I can’t afford to go, I can’t stand it on TV. It’s all commercials, commercials, commercials.

You should really be banned for that, you know.
EDIT: Umm… Dollis Hill.

Ah, yet another aspect of English culture I just haven’t been able to wrap my head around. (Although I do enjoy a good game of Mao.) Alright, you guys get a pass on the NFL.

I would love to see ‘unnecessary implementation of the Dollis Hill Loop’ in the rules of the SDMB :stuck_out_tongue:
