So, due to my own stupidity, I will probably have to take another college class in order to graduate (in August). This gives me an extra few months to ponder what to do once I graduate.
I was planning to go to law school here immediately after finishing my BA (political science, international relations/comparative politics-heavy).
After hearing a lot of “I went straight to law school, decided I didn’t like it, but had to finish and go straight into practicing in order to pay off all my loans” from American law school graduates, I decided I’m probably going to work for a couple of years first.
If I stay here, I can probably get a decent ($30k) full-time legislative aide post. More than enough to support my current lifestyle, since I don’t have any student loans to pay off (yet).
This got me wondering: what kind of job could I get in the UK? I’m a British citizen, moved to the states nine years ago, not worried about readjusting to life in the UK. I just thought it might be interesting to spend a couple years back in the UK.
I will have a degree from a college (University of Central Florida) that perhaps thirty people (including my dad and brother) have heard of, with a less-than-stellar GPA. They don’t do firsts, 1-2s, 2-1s, or anything like that here. I don’t really have any other useful credentials beyond that- I’ve got a few years’ experience in retail, and I helped run an independent campaign for Mayor of Orlando.
So, what kind of job and what kind of payrate might I expect if I went shopping for a job in Britain with credentials like these? Ideally, I’d want something in a field somehow related to politics or law. Would it be a case of “take civil service exam, cross fingers” or is there some kind of post just crying out for an individual like me?
