On the plus side, consider how one Mr Osborne might be feeling. It’s now too late for him to stand as an MP in anticipation of May’s failure.
There is clearly a ‘Labour surge’ though quite where and what that is we probably won’t know until the polls close - it’s regional in a tactical voting environment, with a large number of ‘off radar’ new and returning participants. So he best the polls can give us, imo, is a rough indication of the trends.
It looks impossible for Corbyn but we’ve been there enough in recent times to know their is no such thing.
In the highly unlikely event Labour form the next Government, Corbyn will be PM.
Fwiw, I don’t think the EU and the UK are getting divorced anyway - the UK will take back control of its borders but we just don’t now the rest of the new reality yet, not least because France and Germany have yet to decide how they want the new look EU to be (one election down, one to go).
The new arrangement may or may not fall within the EU brand, but after all the chest beating there will still be a comprehensive agreement.
This is pathetic. Could you truly be any more self-absorbed in your middle class judgemental way. This is the way Labour would like to change the lives and life opportunities of millions of people:
Last I heard, Merkel was on track for another win. That’s “strong, stable leadership” for you.
Thank you for showing me what it’s like to be neither self-absorbed nor judgemental.
I’m not quibbling with Labour’s manifesto (which has many fine points to it). I just think Corbyn lacks all leadership skills – and I say that as someone who vastly preferred him to the other three Labour leadership candidates – and Diane Abbott is a venial self-aggrandizing lickspittle unsuited to the front bench. Of the three I prefer McDonnell, but not by much.
It’s disturbing how often in recent years I’ve had to choose between benign incompetence and active malevolence in elections. Yet here we are again.
I suspect, if it were to happen, Boris is no more in the running than he was last time. It might be David Davis’s moment again. If it were to happen, which it won’t.
And some stupid politico has dragged the Manchester bombing into the election.
Quite properly, though, she’s been slapped down:
Well said, Mr Drew.
I can’t be arsed linking, I’m sure you can all google, but the threat level has just been raised to “critical” ie an attack may be imminent, 1000s of troops are to be deployed to support police in protecting key areas*, and the election campaigning is still suspended.
Well, that’s all very convenient.
- for interested Americans, regular Army gets deployed to help out fairly often, there’s no constitutional issue about that like you lot have. For instance, they ended up doing a lot of the security at the London 2012 Olympics, help out with flood relief etc
A little late, wouldn’t you say? Stable door etc…
And Putin! Don’t forget ol’ Vlad.
Unfortunately, it means that they think the bomber had close links to other potential attackers who a) were already planning on further attacks or b) are likely to do so now rather than wait to be arrested in the aftermath. Or that this is part of a wider co-ordinated campaign.
FWIW, I think the use of troops is now part of standard operating procedure for this threat level, rather than political theatre (although it does have some kind of political impact). I would like to see the campaign restart though. That’s an important “business as usual” signal.
Yes, I agree.
For example, if we had restarted the campaign we could be asking Theresa May about her inability to produce a costed manifesto:
Lifehack: If the central plank of your election campaign is that only you are competent enough to lead Britain through the tough times ahead, don’t make needlessly boneheaded fuck-ups a major part of your manifesto launch.
This election really is a race to the bottom.
And Labour’s Tina Buckley is excelling by calling May a terrorist. (Daily Mail link).
“Labour’s Tina Buckley” is rather over-stating it, no?
‘Unhinged Tina Buckley’ might be closer to the money.
Can’t call foul on anything in these past 48 hours. Are we all back tomorrow?
Nope. Apparently, she’s a Labour activist.
Well she’s got a JC shoulder bag, and has had her photo taken with him, so she’s doubtless a supporter. Doesn’t really make her “Labour’s Tina Buckley” though, does it? That level of association is more for elected officials and candidates.
“The Conservative Party’s Jimmy Savile was accused…”
“UKIP’s Ian Brady died…”
I suspect she might become a bit less… active.
What are we talking about. Another bizarre link.
