Is anybody here following this election? My guess would be not many at all, Mr. Excellent perhaps?
The current standing with half of the votes counted is this:
Yanukovych - 36.86%
Tymoshenko - 24.31%
Tyhypko - 13.08%
Yatsenyuk - 6.8%
Yushchenko - 4.87%
For those of you who do not remember the 2004 election, it was first won by Yanukovych, but after accusations of election fraud and some demonstrations, the runoff was remade, and Yushchenko came out on top, in what has been dubbed the “Orange revolution”.
As you can see, Yushchenko has fallen seriously out of favor after ruling for the last five years, and his rival is in the lead. There will now be a runoff between Yanukovych and Tymoshenko, and from what I’ve read, it will be a close race since most of the lesser candidates’ supporters should gravitate towards Tymoshenko (the current prime-minister, you know, the woman with the pretzel on her head).
Unfortunately, the voters appear to be pretty cynical towards all politicians at this point, and don’t seem to believe that any candidate will make things much better. So the votes are mostly negative ones, against who they like least.
