Ukrainian Refugee Crisis

The UN estimates that at least a million left in a week, and the relevant EU Commissioner estimates a total of at least 7 million.

How does a country suddenly provide that amount of family accommodation? Poland must be feeling the strain and if the flow of refugees continues at this rate, it will need help.

However, at this time of year there is plenty of vacant tourist accommodation in southern Europe - Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece.

The EU needs to get organised fast and at scale. Directing funds to the right places to make it happen. The news is full of stories about individuals and groups organising aid, lots of food, clothes and fluffy toys for the kids. But it is national governments and the UNHCR that have the finance and machinery to deal with refugee projects on such huge scale.

Here’s a nice story about individuals from Netherlands helping alleviate the Ukrainian refugee crisis in Poland:

This is about Tesla owners in Netherlands driving their personal vehicles to Poland. They bring along clothes and food for the refugees and bring back small groups, in this case, a mother and daughter. Individually, it’s not a big thing, but collectively I’m sure they make a difference. And with the situation at the refugee centers, anything relieving the pressure is good.
