It would be interesting if including a “Other” on the poll would automatically create a new item on the list as people suggest them, which subsequent voters could choose.
Again, I ran a thread asking for Nominees for Top Nine, and then included the ones people suggested. Along with those I thought of myself.
However, it’s turning out that the interesting part of this survey isn’t just isolating a Top Nine, Top 12 or whatever. What’s fun is seeing the relative interest in Rush vs. The Bible, or Ayn Rand vs. Terry Prachett.
So if I was starting over, I’d throw in an extra 10 or 15 candidates. However more than 50 or 60 might make voters eyes glaze over.
I love over half of the selections. I really, REALLY love several, especially Lord of the Rings (books and movies), Blade Runner and the Coen Brothers, but…
I’m really only obsessed by 3 things. Movies in general, Kate Bush and Happy Rhodes. None of those would have made a list like the above and that’s perfectly understandable, but since I didn’t want to diss that fine list by choosing the somewhat dissy “None of the Above,” I chose “Why wasn’t ______ included?” as a compromise, even though I know why they weren’t.
After voting, I remembered not only Pink Floyd but also Futurama!
To me, “None” is just another interesting data point. It says that less than one person in 20 hasn’t been fascinated* by something on the list. So, I don’t see it as dissy, and I’m glad Twickster added it.
*or mildly obsessed, or even really really in love with. (But I respect your choice of nothing more than someone picking 20, which would be just too culturally promiscuous. )
