The Amish make great baked goods and their furniture is supposed to be pretty good quality, for those who like that Shaker style.
They also run most of the puppy mills in the USA and treat their beasts of burden fairly wretchedly, so fuck’em.

Awww…Stupid Amish.
RitterSport, Fred Philps is dead. Did you know that?
Yup! The Westboro Baptist Church is still going, though.
I drive by their compound nearly every day. It’s on the way to my job, and to the dog park. I used to hold picket signs against them, in the early 90’s. The “chw” in my email address stands for “crop headed whore” which is what the WBC folks used to shout at us women who cut their hair. One time we laughed at that, and they called the police to report us for disturbing the peace.
Well, at least they didn’t chase you down the street for being immodest. Or, throw rocks at you and your baby for that same reason.
Although I hesitate to tar Hasidim with that broad brush. And, I can’t believe you’re so anti-Christian, in fact, anti-human, when you call out the WBC for something negative (according to BigT).
More seriously, thanks for picketing against them! They are a nasty bunch.

I’ve been getting a lot of complaints about the title to this thread coming across as particularly anti-Semitic, and I admit it makes me a bit uncomfortable, too. After talking it over with the rest of the moderators, I’ve decided to change it to the more neutral “Ultra-Orthodox Jews of New York spreading covid and other problems.”
This change is not intended as a sanction of any kind on the OP.
[/Moderating]
Possibly because the OP is an anti-Semite . . . but that’s just a WAG.
I think you’re onto something.
Except that the OP also complains about their employment and military service in Israel, so all you’ve done is divorce the title of the thread from its content.
It is not the title that’s antisemitic, Miller. You’re just slapping a coat of paint across a bunch of rotting wood.
I mean, fuck, a lot of the Hasidim really are enormously bigoted, anti-science assholes. There are so many valid ways to complain about them that it takes a really concerted, artistic effort to still make it pointedly racist.
Yes, that TAL episode is what really got them on my radar too.
For those dismissing them as a tiny sect or comparing them to Druids: do you realize how much power they have in Israel, a nuclear power that gets billions in military assistance from us? Their ultra-literal interpretation of the Torah is quite ominous when you get to passages like this:
(Palestinians are generally understood to qualify as “Canaanites” by this definition.)
Hang on, my OP was about ultra-Orthodox. I had a girlfriend who was Orthodox, and though she did do all the silly stuff on the Sabbath, the rest of the week she was nothing like those people.
[ETA: There appears to be a quote missing here. I think it was something about how being ultra-Orthodox is not an ethnicity but an ideology adults consciously choose and can choose to depart from.]
This is such an important point. Watch the excellent Hulu miniseries Orthodox for an example (based on a real life memoir) of how people, even women, can escape this religion. It’s tough, and scary, but at least in the U.S. it’s doable.
Preach!
Uh, yeah: we were just now arguing about Bill Burr (who I think is hilarious) and she stated that she “studied intersectional feminism in grad school”. She is most definitely a big ol’ feminist.
And I’m not going to respond to your strawman allegations about my supposed “blatant misogyny” until you actually link to posts.
Pffft. I made it clear that I have very warm feelings toward the majority of Jews. It’s religious extremists from any religion (including Christianity, Islam, Hindu) that I detest.
Yes, I was definitely not just talking about NY, so I don’t appreciate this title change.
Yes, your love of non-extremist Islam is legendary on this board!
Studying something does not make one a proponent of it. Nor does it guarantee you’ve truly absorbed the lesson.
I became good friends with the professor of my Islam seminar, a Muslim but a liberal and pretty secular one AFAICT. We hung out socially, played tennis, etc. Despite his nominal faith, he introduced me to Maxime Rodinson’s Marxist/atheistic biography of Mohammed (sadly, if someone were to write such a tome today, it would likely incite riots and they would have to go into hiding). But the median Muslim in the world is far more “conservative” (i.e., repressive) toward women, gays, and freethinkers than is the median Christian or Jew. That’s just an incontrovertible fact. I hope it will change!
Riiight, that’s why my wife has RBG’s book on her bedside table. So she can…tear her down? Or something?
