Ultrasound scans and scanning equipment

My girlfriend having had three scans of our kid this week, I’ve noticed its quite hard for the scanner to grab a picture when the baby’s the right way round for a full shot of it. That and it seems to print out on some glossy paper that’s quite delicate.

Do any machines take a film or a few shots within milli-seconds of each other to take away the “now -wait -NOW!” technique of photographing the baby? And why is it necessary to have the scan printed on such crappy paper?
