I’m looking for a word, already existing or not, that encompasses all visual entertainments recorded on a tangible media.
To elaborate, we have the terms motion picture, movie, film…etc to typically refer to products originally projected on screens in cinemas, and we have TV series, mini-series for stuff originally intended for the telly; video, now somewhat antiquated, for the VHS tape medium. Animation for that created by computer or pencil/paper. Some of these terms derive from the medium of communication, some from the nature of the media or entertainment.
The word I want is one which includes video entertainment, irrespective of nature of product or medium of transmission, but which denotes that this is a visually-enacted entertainment captured on media and consumed by manipulating that media.
Motion Picture sounds like it should cover it, but in the vernacular, it doesn’t include a sitcom shown on TV. Besides, literally, it doesn’t specify media. Film - not everything’s on film nowadays, and the sitcom objection again applies. Video - still seems connected to the post-cinema-run mass commodity, and even ignoring that, doesn’t demarcate entertainment from news or non-fiction in general, although technically this seems the closest.
If there isn’t an existing term, what neologism seems apt?
